Caring For Your Biopsy Site
Today we removed a small sample of tissue so it can be examined and we can get you a clear answer. The site is small and usually heals quickly. A little gentle care over the next several days helps it heal smoothly. Here is how, plus what to expect on results.
The First Few Days
- Mild soreness at the site is normal and eases within a few days.
- You may have a stitch or two. These often dissolve on their own. Do not pull at them.
- Some oozing the first day is normal. Gentle gauze pressure helps.
Keeping It Clean
- Brush gently around the site, avoiding direct pressure on it the first few days.
- Warm salt water rinses after meals, starting the day after, keep it clean.
- Avoid spicy, crunchy, or acidic foods that can irritate the area.
About Your Results
- The sample goes to a lab for analysis. Results usually take about one to two weeks.
- We will contact you as soon as we hear back to go over what it means and any next steps.
- Try not to worry while you wait. A biopsy is how we get clear, accurate answers.
- For tender gums, vitamin E can soothe and help healing. Take it over the counter, or break a gel capsule and rub it on the gums. You can also ask us for StellaLife gel.
Call Us If
- Bleeding that is heavy or will not slow with gentle pressure.
- Pain or swelling that worsens after a few days, or a fever.
- A bad taste or odor, or signs of infection at the site.
- Anything that concerns you while it heals.
Healing Well While You Wait
The site heals best kept clean and undisturbed. Most biopsy sites heal quickly with simple care.
- Be gentle with the area and keep it clean with salt water rinses.
- Eat soft foods for a few days and chew away from the site.
- Keep your follow-up so we can check healing and review your results together.
Take good care of the site and we will be in touch with your results soon!
