Caring For Your Healing Abutment
Today we placed a healing abutment, a small cap on your implant that sticks just above the gum line. It shapes the gum and prepares the area for your final crown. It is a minor step, and a little care keeps the gum healthy around it. Here is how.
The First Few Days
- Mild gum tenderness around the abutment is normal for a day or two.
- You will see or feel the cap just above the gum. That is supposed to be there.
- Warm salt water rinses soothe the gum if it feels sore.
Keeping It Clean
- Gently brush around the abutment to keep the gum healthy. Plaque collects right at the edge.
- Do not pick at it with your tongue or fingers.
- Rinse after meals to clear food from around the cap.
What To Expect
- The gum will shape around it over the next few weeks, creating a natural collar for your crown.
- You can eat normally, but chew gently on that side at first.
- If the cap feels loose or comes off, save it and call us. It is a quick fix, not an emergency.
