Caring For Your Healing Abutment

Today we placed a healing abutment, a small cap on your implant that sticks just above the gum line. It shapes the gum and prepares the area for your final crown. It is a minor step, and a little care keeps the gum healthy around it. Here is how.

The First Few Days

  • Mild gum tenderness around the abutment is normal for a day or two.
  • You will see or feel the cap just above the gum. That is supposed to be there.
  • Warm salt water rinses soothe the gum if it feels sore.

Keeping It Clean

  • Gently brush around the abutment to keep the gum healthy. Plaque collects right at the edge.
  • Do not pick at it with your tongue or fingers.
  • Rinse after meals to clear food from around the cap.

What To Expect

  • The gum will shape around it over the next few weeks, creating a natural collar for your crown.
  • You can eat normally, but chew gently on that side at first.
  • If the cap feels loose or comes off, save it and call us. It is a quick fix, not an emergency.
