Caring For Your Immediate Denture

Today you received an immediate denture, placed the same day your teeth were removed so you never go without a smile. It also acts like a bandage over the healing gums. The first 24 hours are important, and the fit will change as you heal. Here is what to expect and how to care for it.

The First 24 Hours

  • Leave the denture in for the first 24 hours, even to sleep. It controls swelling and protects the area.
  • We will remove it together at your visit the next day.
  • Bite gently on gauze if there is oozing the first day.

As You Heal

  • Expect the fit to change. As the gums shrink while healing, the denture will loosen, this is normal.
  • You will need a reline or adjustments as that happens. It does not mean anything is wrong.
  • Use adhesive if needed for stability while you heal.

Eating, Cleaning & Comfort

  • Soft foods in small pieces at first, chewing on both sides.
  • After 24 hours, remove and rinse it after meals, and use warm salt water rinses to soothe the gums.
  • Take it out at night going forward (after the first day) so your gums can rest.
  • Do not let sore spots linger, a quick adjustment fixes them.

What To Expect Over The Coming Months

An immediate denture is a journey, not a one-time fit. Your gums and bone reshape as they heal, so the denture is adjusted along the way until everything settles.

Stick with the adjustments and you will end up with a comfortable, well-fitting smile!
