Caring For Your New Implant
Your tooth was removed and an implant was placed the same day, often with bone graft around it and a healing cap on top. The implant now needs to fuse to your bone over the coming weeks, a process called integration. Protecting it while that happens is everything.
The First Few Days
- Bite on gauze with firm pressure for 30 to 45 minutes, replacing as needed.
- Leave the healing cap alone. That piece you may feel is meant to be there. Do not wiggle it.
- Rest, head elevated. Ice 20 on, 20 off the first day. Skip exercise.
Protect The Implant
An implant integrates best undisturbed. For the first several days:
- No straws, smoking, or spitting for at least 3 days.
- Do not chew on the implant. Keep food on the other side.
- No pushing on it with tongue or finger.
Comfort
- Stay ahead of pain with medication on schedule before discomfort builds.
- Gentle salt water rinses begin the next day, several times daily.
Eating & Cleaning
- Soft, cool foods the first few days. Nothing crunchy or hard near the site.
- Take your antibiotic as prescribed if one was given.
- Keep the area clean, brushing gently around the healing cap once cleared.
Call Us If
- Bleeding is heavy and will not slow after 2 hours of pressure.
- The implant or healing cap feels loose or moves.
- Pain worsens after day 3, or swelling grows with fever.
- The healing cap falls out, or anything concerns you.
How To Help Your Implant Integrate
The implant must fuse to your bone before it can carry a crown. Give it a calm, clean, smoke-free environment and your body locks it in solid.
- No nicotine, period. Smoking is the number one cause of implant failure because it starves the bone of blood flow.
- Do not load it early. Keep chewing off the implant until we clear you. Pressure during integration is the enemy.
- Keep it clean and keep your follow-ups. Gentle cleaning plus your check visits confirm it is fusing the way it should.
Protect it now and it can serve you for many years!
