Caring For Your New Implant

Your implant, a small titanium post that replaces the root of a single tooth, has been placed into the bone. It now needs to fuse to that bone over the next several weeks, a process called integration. You may have a healing cap showing through the gum, or it may be tucked under the tissue. Protecting it now is what makes it last.

The First Few Days

  • Mild bleeding or oozing the first day is normal. Bite gauze with light pressure if needed.
  • Leave the site alone. Do not wiggle a healing cap or tug at stitches.
  • Rest, head elevated. Ice 20 on, 20 off the first day. Skip heavy activity.

Protect The Implant

  • No straws, smoking, or spitting for at least 3 days.
  • Do not chew on the implant. Keep food to the other side while it fuses.
  • No poking with tongue or finger.

Comfort

  • Stay ahead of pain with medication on schedule before discomfort builds.
  • Gentle salt water rinses start the next day, several times daily.

Eating & Cleaning

  • Soft foods the first few days, working back to normal away from the site.
  • Take your antibiotic as prescribed if one was given.
  • Keep the area clean, brushing gently around a healing cap once cleared.

How To Help Your Implant Integrate

The implant must fuse to your bone before it can carry a crown. Give it a calm, clean, smoke-free environment and your body locks it in solid.

Protect it now and your new tooth can serve you for many years!
