Nitrous, Oral, or IV Sedation: Which One Is Right for You?

Three levels of sedation, one goal: a visit that doesn’t feel like a big deal. Here’s how they differ and how we help you choose.

First, what sedation actually does

Sedation dentistry doesn’t knock you out like surgery on TV. It dials your nervous system down — from “white-knuckling the armrest” to “honestly, that was fine.” The right level depends on your anxiety, your health history, and what we’re doing that day. At Love Dental we offer three levels, and we’ll help you choose.

Nitrous oxide: the light touch

Laughing gas flows through a soft nose mask while you stay fully awake and in control. It takes the edge off within minutes — and here’s its superpower: it wears off within minutes too. Most adults drive themselves home afterward. It’s our most popular option for cleanings, fillings, and anyone who’s simply a little tense in the chair.

Oral sedation: deeper calm in pill form

You take a prescribed medication before your visit and arrive already relaxed. Most patients stay awake but deeply at ease, and many remember very little of the appointment — which, for a lot of people, is exactly the point. You’ll need someone to drive you home and a quiet rest of your day, and we walk you through every rule beforehand.

IV sedation: the deepest option

Medication delivered through a small IV gives us precise, adjustable control and gives you the deepest relaxation we offer — most patients recall nothing at all. It shines for longer procedures, complex treatment plans finished in a single visit, and patients whose anxiety has kept them away from the dentist for years. We reserve dedicated appointment times for our private sedation cases so the office is calm and unhurried.

How we choose together

There’s no wrong answer — only the level that fits you. At your consultation we go over your health history, your medications, and honestly, your nerves. Fear should never be the reason your smile waits another year. Read more on our sedation dentistry page, or see what your first visit looks like — we set aside a full 90 minutes for it.
